Is Simple Living Boring? No. Here's What to Expect Instead.

Is Simple Living Boring?

Many of us want to slow down and live a simple life, and it sounds wonderful to think of having less clutter and chaos. But to others, the idea of living a life with less sounds incredibly boring.

They might think, “What am I supposed to do with myself when I don’t have a bunch of things filling my time? If I stop buying and collecting stuff to make me happy, won’t my life be dull?”

We have all grown used to buying whatever we want and filling our closets and shelves with things that serve no purpose. When we slow down and simplify, at first it may seem like we have nothing left to do. We're afraid it will be boring.

Give it time. You are now free.

Does Living a Simple Life Free Up Time for Yourself?

Yes.

When you embrace simple living, you will find that all that time you spent gathering and consuming can be put to more fruitful things.

Think about this:

How many books do you have on the shelf waiting to be read? What happens when you start reading them instead of buying more and adding to the TBR pile?

According to theladders.com, the top five things people would do with more time include:

  1. Spending time with family (44%)

  2. Traveling more (43%)

  3. Exercising more (33%)

  4. Spending time with friends (30%)

  5. Pursuing hobbies (29%).

What about you?

Instead of shopping for more stuff, would you want to go to the park with family or work on a home improvement project? Instead of arranging and dusting all your clutter, wouldn’t it be nice to make a home-cooked meal instead of ordering from DoorDash?

If you think enough about it, I bet there are many things you would rather be doing than buying and consuming:

  • Taking a road trip

  • Working out or walking

  • Starting a side hustle

  • Learning new skills

  • Taking a nap once in a while

  • Investing the money you’re saving

When you simplify your life you will never be bored because all of us have a laundry list of things we would rather do if we had more time and money.

Simplifying gives us freedom.

Does Living a Simple Life Give You More Freedom?

Yes.

Think about freedom for a moment. We all have things that must be done. We have to:

  • Work to make a living

  • Get enough sleep every day

  • Eat meals to sustain ourselves

  • Take care of our families

But what about the rest of the time? Are we filling our hours with scrolling through social media because we are just so tired of the stress and chaos, and we don’t feel like we have the energy for anything else?

What if, after we were done taking care of our needs, we were free to explore our wants and find fulfillment in something other than buying and consuming?

What if...

  • Your free time was FREE, and you weren’t forced into busywork all the time

  • The things we owned no longer owned us and we had time for ourselves

  • We finally had time to do the things we have only been dreaming of

When we live a simple and uncluttered life, we are free to live our lives without stress and chaos. We are free to do whatever we want because the things we own aren’t weighing us down.

Imagine no longer being stuck in a rut.

Are You Ready to Embrace a Simple Life?

You'll have to answer this for yourself. But here's something to think about:

As I said before, when we are free to do things that make us fulfilled and happy, we find we don’t need all that clutter to ensure our lives are not dull.

When you embrace a simple life, you are free to do things you never had time and money for before. When you are not living in a chaotic and stress-filled environment, you are free to start living a minimalist life you only dreamed of in the past.

Some may say living simply is boring, but the truth is that it is freeing, and it’s up to you which way you wish to live.

Summary of Key Points

  • When you simplify your life, it doesn’t mean you will be bored. Less chaos frees you to explore things you didn’t have time for before.

  • When we are not in a constant race to see how much stuff we can gather and fill our houses with, we have time to relax and de-stress.

  • When you are free to do things that make you fulfilled and happy, you will find you don’t need all that clutter to ensure your life is not dull.
